My favorite book
My favorite book is “the Great Gatsby”. The story’s contention was set in the prosperous 1922’s Long Island in the United States, during that time, America was in their Jazz Age which the most significant thing for people in that time is the money and the position.
When I first saw the title, I did not know why the book is called “the Great Gatsby”, and I thought that many this book is a outstanding person's memoir. However, after I finished reading this book, I understand the intention of the author of using this name--When the entire society are engaged in having fun, Gatsby did not follow the mainstream, he uses all his time to pursue his “American Dream” and even though the book said nothing about the greatness of Gatsby, but with the development of the story, I understand that.
Of the whole book, all of the plots are telling stories between different couples, Quite the opposite, there's no true love between them, which leads to meaningful afterthoughts. I think the emotion between Gatsby and Daisy is not love. Although Gatsby expresses his strong obsession with Daisy, his just can't forget their "love at the first sight" when they were all young and naive. After I finished reading the book, I write a report to my Chinese teacher and discussed with her, she said: “At your age, this comprehension is enough, if you read again when you are in the university, your understand toward this book will be different. Also, you misunderstand one thing that Gatsby is not that great, he also want to live in the East Egg area which only people with large amounts of money and high position can live, that’s the reason Gatsby think he is still fall in love with Daisy. Hence, Gatsby is just different with people in the Jazz age, he is just greater than them.”
Your Chinese teacher is very wise! She is right. I remember reading it in high school and then again as an adult. I hope you do this one day. It really changed my mind!
